  • Receive specialized care at a facility designed to meet Bone & Joint’s high-quality standards.
  • Recover faster in the center and, in most cases, go home the same day.
  • Probably pay between 10 to 50 percent less than the amount charged for a traditional hospital stay.
  • Qualify for our zero-cost, zero-interest healthcare financing if your procedure costs more than $1,000.
If orthopedic surgery is in your future, Bone & Joint’s Surgery Center may be your best option.

Bone & Joint’s Surgery Center uses the most advanced technology when possible. In addition to total joint replacement procedures, our surgeons are skilled at minimally invasive approaches to knee surgery, anterior hip replacement, microscopic nerve repair, and ligament and tendon repair. These minimally invasive approaches take less time, cause less pain, and allow you to go home and heal faster.

Can anyone have surgery at Bone & Joint’s Surgery Center?

Unfortunately, the answer is “no.”

Anytime a person has surgery, there are risks – even for someone in good health. Chronic health conditions increase the chances of complications that may require an extended hospital stay. In some cases, the potential for health-related complications outweighs the convenience and savings of a surgery center.

People who are in good health, who have a reasonable body mass index, who do not suffer from chronic heart or lung disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure or diabetes, are good candidates for the Surgery Center. Our surgeons assess the health of their patients on a case-by-case basis. If someone suffers from a chronic condition that is well-controlled, he or she may still qualify to have surgery at Bone & Joint.

While most insurance companies cover the costs of procedures performed in an ambulatory surgery center, Medicaid and Medicare programs have some limitations. Neither program allows total joint replacement procedures outside the traditional hospital setting.

Are surgery centers safe?

Yes. Since the first ambulatory surgery center opened its doors 40 years ago, federal and state authorities routinely scrutinize and inspect the facilities to ensure they meet safety and quality-of-care standards. State and federal agencies, like Medicare, require licenses and certifications.

Bone & Joint also goes the extra mile for voluntary review and accreditation by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, Inc., (AAAHC) to assure that you are receiving a high standard of care.

Not all surgery centers operate alike. Not all surgery centers choose to put themselves through this rigorous evaluation. Bone & Joint is the only AAAHC accredited orthopedic surgery center in Wausau. Bone & Joint works hard to maintain its AAAHC accreditation to ensure the Surgery Center meets or exceeds the nationally recognized standards for safety and quality.

According to the Ambulatory Surgery Center Association, patients treated at surgery centers report a 92 percent patient-satisfaction rate. Bone & Joint’s patient satisfaction rating for its surgical center aligns with the national average. Because Bone and Joint works to meet these higher standards, you can count on us for quality care.

What about the cost?

No one should delay treatment because of financial concerns.

Bone & Joint set up zero-cost Health Service Financing so you can focus on getting better instead of worrying about how to pay for healthcare.

Not only are the costs of procedures at an ambulatory surgery center approximately 10 to 50 percent less than traditional hospital stays, but Bone & Joint also offers zero-interest healthcare financing for treatments totaling $1,000 or more; costs of several procedures for the same family or individual may be combined to qualify for the financing program.  (Please see our Health Services Financing terms.)

With the high cost of traditional hospital care, deductibles, and co-pays, treatment at Bone & Joint’s outpatient surgical center is an easy choice.

Are there special preparations for surgery at the Surgical Center?

We make sure our patients are ready for surgery, whether the procedure takes place in the hospital or in our Surgery Center. We offer pre- and post-operative care classes and make sure the patient and their caregiver understand the instructions.

We also give each patient and caregiver information to help them plan and prepare for self-care before, during, and after surgery. Sometimes, we ask patients to do special exercises before surgery to strengthen the muscles that will compensate for movements while their surgical site is healing.

We designed a follow-up schedule to ensure our patients are recovering properly. We call every one of our patients the day following their surgery.

Bone & Joint strives for excellence.

Our surgeons and our surgical staff are continually assessing and improving their level of care. They want to make each patient experience the best it can be.
Bone & Joint’s Surgery Center gives you access to a high-quality, cost-effective alternative to hospital care that is tailored to your needs and schedule.
