If the suffering is happening in a loving relationship, it\u2019s probably a toss-up.<\/p>\n<p>Just ask Sue Coffman. She knows what it\u2019s like to watch a spouse go through disabling pain.<\/p>\n<p>Jim and Sue enjoy being active. They love to walk and enjoy the wildlife around their Eagle River home. One of their hobbies is raising Birmingham Rollers, acrobatic pigeons.<\/p>\n<p>They describe their life as a little slice of heaven.<\/p>\n<p>But that was not always the case. There was a time when Sue was concerned that their lives were going to be filled with chronic pain and disability.<\/p>\n<p>Jim suffered from arthritis in his hip. Before he called Bone &amp; Joint, his hip pain became so severe that even caring for his beloved pigeons was almost impossible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was pretty much sitting in a recliner and not walking much,\u201d said Jim. \u201cI was always limping and dragging my leg.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Bone &amp; Joint\u2019s,\u00a0<a href=\"\/providers\/eric-j-thiel-md\/\">orthopedic surgeon, Eric Thiel, MD<\/a>, it\u2019s not uncommon for people to wait until they can\u2019t stand the pain anymore before they ask for help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor many patients who live with constant pain, they almost forget what it\u2019s like not to have pain,\u201d said Dr. Thiel. \u201cThey come in when the pain pushes them to their limits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jim and Sue made an appointment at Bone &amp; Joint to see what could be done to stop Jim\u2019s pain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Dr. Thiel had Jim get up, walk, and move, he watched him,\u201d said Sue. \u201cThen he rolled his chair over to Jim, looked him in the eye, and said, \u2018I can fix this.\u2019 We were so relieved. Finally, we had hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Thiel talked to Jim and Sue about the\u00a0<a href=\"ttps:\/\/bonejoint.net\/old\/news-events\/blog\/what-are-the-benefits-of-hip-replacement-surgery\/\">risks and benefits of hip replacement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMedicine, as we know, is complex,\u201d said Dr. Thiel. \u201cIt\u2019s a different language. It\u2019s my job to interpret it and treat each patient like they are a member of my family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jim and Sue listened as Dr. Thiel explained Jim\u2019s current condition and how hip replacement surgery would eliminate most of the pain and give him the ability to move again. Dr. Thiel\u2019s approach gave Jim the confidence he needed to schedule the surgery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey had me walking the afternoon after surgery,\u201d said Jim. \u201cI noticed right away, my pain was gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jim\u2019s response is common.
