Stay Independent this Fourth of July"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><em>Estimated Reading Time 3 Minutes<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Fireworks and the 4th of July go together like brats and buns.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">But, lighting the sky up at home has its risks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">An explosive injury can lead to the loss of independence and, in worse-case scenarios, the loss of life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">According to the National Safety Council, 17 people died, and more than 12,000 people\u00a0were injured by fireworks in 2017. Half of those injured were under 20 years of age.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Even the most \u201charmless\u201d of types cause injury. Firecrackers cause nearly a fifth of fireworks-related injuries. Sparklers cause another 25 percent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">According to a June 26, 2019 press release from the\u00a0<a title=\"Consumer Product Safety Commission Celebrate-with-Safety-This-Fourth-of-July-Season Press Release\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cpsc.gov\/Newsroom\/News-Releases\/2019\/CPSC-Reminds-Consumers-to-Celebrate-with-Safety-This-Fourth-of-July-Season\">Consumer Product Safety Commission<\/a>, 62 percent of fireworks injuries that occurred in 2018 happened between\u00a0June 22 and July 22.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Here are a few fireworks safety reminders to help you clear of emergency rooms this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Be careful when choosing fireworks.<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Save yourself some time, frustration, and embarrassment. Check your city, county, and state laws about when, where, and how you can light fireworks. Nothing stops a celebration faster than red and blue flashing lights.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Only buy legal fireworks. Pass on items wrapped in brown paper. This packaging indicates they were part of a professional display.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Avoid using homemade fireworks. They are a recipe for disaster. Leave the pyrotechnics to the professionals.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong>Store and carry fireworks safely<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Fireworks are explosives; handle them with extreme care.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Place unused firecrackers and other rockets in a cool, dry place away from combustible materials.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Follow any special storage instructions on the package.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Avoid putting pyrotechnics in your pockets. If they ignite, they can cause serious injury.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Be Prepared<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">In 2017, fireworks caused about 18,500 fires. Before you light one match or flick a lighter, ensure you have fast water access to put out hot spots.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Turn on the hose<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Fill a bucket<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">You\u2019ll need to pour water over used cartridges, duds, and misfires before throwing them in the trash.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-853 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/bonejoint.net\/old\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/97730704_s.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"413\" height=\"275\" \/>Keep a close eye on children<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Children of all ages are fascinated by fire and sparks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Supervise children closely. Even sparklers, which can reach temperatures hot enough to melt metal, can cause injury. Keep children a safe distance away from firecrackers and other rockets that explode from or travel across the ground.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong>Use Fireworks safely<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Only light pyrotechnic devices if there is no fire danger in your area.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Don\u2019t use explosives while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Wear protective glasses or goggles if you\u2019re lighting fireworks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Place unlit fireworks away from the active firing area.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Keep your arms, legs, hands, and feet away from burning fuses.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Never hold an explosive when the fuse is lit.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Light one firecracker or rocket at a time and move a safe distance away from the\u00a0explosion.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Don\u2019t light fireworks in a glass or metal container.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Don\u2019t light fireworks inside a building.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Never point or throw firecrackers or other explosives toward another person.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Light pyrotechnics a safe distance away from houses, woods, or cars.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong>Never re-light or handle a dud.<\/strong>\u00a0It could explode at any moment.
