Are you at risk for orthopedic injuries this winter?

On the way to work, Jane stepped off her porch. She didn’t notice the clear black ice at the base of her steps. Her right leg went out from under her as her left leg stayed on the step. She heard the pop as she felt the crack. Jane couldn’t move. She yelled for help as searing pain tore through her knee. Fortunately, her neighbor heard her cries for help. He rushed to her side and called 9-1-1. A medical exam confirmed that Jane had broken her knee cap and had torn all the ligaments in her knee.

Wisconsin isn’t called the frozen tundra […]

Do you have cold hands?

“Your hands are cold!”

Have you ever heard those words?

If you’re like most people living in Wisconsin, you’ve experienced cold hands at some point during the winter months.

It’s true cold hands mean a warm heart.

Most people experience cold hands as their bodies respond to lower temperatures. To protect critical brain, heart, and lung function, the surrounding muscles constrict the arteries and decrease blood flow to the extremities (arms, legs, hands, and feet). At the same time, blood flow to the internal organs increases. This process is called vasoconstriction.

A symptom of this involuntary response is cold hands, confirming […]

What condition would you like to be in?

It’s July. We’re an equal distance between our New Year’s Resolution and the start of the next year.

Most likely, those who kept their resolutions are close to achieving success. But for the rest of us, it’s NOT too late to start a fitness and conditioning program and finish the year strong.

We’re not talking about losing weight; we’re talking about becoming the best version of fitness you can be. Often, that starts with a conditioning program.

Conditioning is defined as the act of bringing something into a desired state of use. When that definition applies to your […]

What kind of footprints do you leave?

We all leave footprints in this world. There are carbon footprints, water footprints, and footprints in the sand.

What does your footprint say about you?

In orthopedic terms, footprints say a lot about foot health.

To see what type of footprint you leave, wet your bare feet and then stand on a piece of craft paper or concrete. Note the shape of the footprint you leave behind. Typically, you will see your toes in each print. The differences in footprints are most often seen in the arch, the section between the toes and the heels.

The arches in your […]

What is scar tissue?

You cut yourself. You bleed. After a few minutes, the bleeding slows and stops. A day or two later, you notice a brownish scab forms over the wound. After a while, the scab falls off and a smooth, hairless patch appears underneath—a scar is formed.

Chances are you’ve witnessed the life-cycle of a scar on your skin without knowing what was really going on under the surface.

Cuts and surgical wounds separate layers of skin, fat, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and other tissues. To bridge the gap, your body’s myofibroblasts make collagen and knit the edges of your […]

Jerry’s limp was getting worse. The injury that started out as a mild irritation had become a constant pain that kept him awake at night. He made an appointment with his primary care provider. Jerry left his doctor’s office with an appointment scheduled to see an orthopaedic surgeon. But, Jerry wanted to make sure the surgeon who operated on his hip offered expert care.

You, like Jerry, may need to find an orthopaedic provider. How do you know […]
