What are growing pains?
Once or twice a month, Janet wakes from a deep sleep when eight-year-old Cindy cries out in the wee hours of the morning.
Cindy is not having a bad dream. She‘s experiencing throbbing pain in her calves. Janet goes into Cindy’s room to rub the backs of her daughter’s legs. It helps relieve the pain. Then, together, they walk to the kitchen for a drink of water and Cindy goes back to bed. Janet makes plans to call the doctor in the morning.
Many children between 3 and 8 years of age experience this type of leg pain, commonly called […]
Muscle cramps can be a real pain

Excruciating Pain. Hard knots under the skin. These are just some of the words used to describe muscle cramps.
These involuntary contractions have the power to awaken you from a deep sleep, stop you during a workout, or interrupt your much-needed rest. Muscle cramps can make grown men moan and utter unintelligible words under their breath as they furiously rub their muscles or move to stretch out the muscle and relieve the pain.
Most of us have experienced muscle cramps and spasms at some point in our lives.
Cramps can occur in every muscle of your body. Skeletal […]
What’s the difference between integrated pain management and interventional pain management?
Both integrated pain management and interventional pain management are treatment styles designed to help people relieve chronic and acute pain and discomfort.
According to the American Academy of Pain Medicine, more than 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain – nearly four times the number of people who have diabetes and more than five times the number of people who suffer from coronary heart disease.
Chronic pain is a problem of epidemic proportions.
Though they may look healthy on the outside, people who suffer from chronic pain often exert herculean efforts to get out of a chair, […]
Why does my knee hurt when I climb the stairs?
Joe asked himself that question every time he stood at the bottom of the steps and looked up at the landing. The stairs had become a physical endurance test. Each step caused searing pain in his knees no matter how slowly or carefully he climbed. The pain, which started in his right knee, now affected his left. Most of the time, Joe avoided the stairs by sleeping on the couch in the den and storing his clothes in the desk drawers. But, today he needed his suit from the bedroom closet.
Has knee pain ever caused […]
I’ve got my soulmate back again
What’s worse: watching a loved one suffer or suffering yourself? If the suffering is happening in a loving relationship, it’s probably a toss-up.
Just ask Sue Coffman. She knows what it’s like to watch a spouse go through disabling pain.
Jim and Sue enjoy being active. They love to walk and enjoy the wildlife around their Eagle River home. One of their hobbies is raising Birmingham Rollers, acrobatic pigeons.
They describe their life as a little slice of heaven.
But that was not always the case. There was a time when Sue was concerned that their lives were going to be […]
I feel dizzy. My head is spinnin’
Dizziness is not a pleasant sensation. Episodes can leave you feeling unbalanced, faint, and sick to your stomach. Dizziness also increases your risk of falling.
But most episodes of dizziness by themselves are not life-threatening.
Fast movements can cause blood pressure to drop. Long stretches between meals can cause a dip in blood sugar. Occasionally, feeling dizzy, weak, or woozy are symptoms of other conditions and should be taken seriously.
Many people find the condition unpleasant. In fact, four out of 10 people call their doctors for check-ups because they feel dizzy.
So, what causes dizziness?
People who complain about […]
Missteps be a real pain in the hip

Janet was helping load the kayak after a day on the lake when she stepped back on the uneven ground. She felt something snap in her right hip, causing an instantaneous sharp, throbbing pain on the outside of her hip.
Janet continued to help load the van, but she moved slowly and carefully.
What caused Janet’s hip pain?
Janet didn’t fall. And she could bear weight on her hip, so she was fairly sure her hip was not broken.
She went home, rested, and applied ice to reduce the swelling and inflammation. She stayed as still as possible, lying […]
Have you ever wondered why your joints and muscles ache when you have the flu?
Though body aches are never enjoyable, they are evidence that your body’s immune system is working.
When a virus enters your body, your immune system gets ready for battle.
As the white blood cells fight the infection, you suffer the side effects: headaches, fever, runny nose, and sore throat. Along with these symptoms, you may experience muscle weakness (myositis) and joint and muscle pain (myalgia). These side effects may be your immune system’s way of making you rest.
Your immune system, not the virus, causes muscle aches and joint pain.
During the immune response, white blood cells produce glycoproteins […]

Nothing ruins a Thanksgiving celebration faster than a severe injury. Yet, every year people are rushed to emergency rooms for carving, frying and lifting accidents associated with the holiday. Keep your Thanksgiving Day feast a little safer with these tips.
Use caution when cooking your bird.
Turkey fryers have become commonplace in many households as a “quick and easy” way to cook a whole turkey. Unfortunately, the process also has caused many serious injuries. Here are a few reminders to help you stay injury-free while deep frying your turkey this year.
Preventing hockey injuries from head to toe
Three periods of blades, sticks, and pucks
traveling across the ice at high speed.
It’s exciting. It’s physical. It’s hockey.
Hockey is not just a contact sport; it is a collision sport. Players race forward and backward on the ice, digging sharpened skates in the ice to execute abrupt stops and direction changes. Players take shots, fake shots, and block shots while skating swiftly down the ice toward the goal.
With one eye on the puck and the other on the goal, it is no wonder that players are injured by swinging sticks, flying pucks, or collisions with other […]
